Intelligence and the Web

The web plays an ever-increasing role in modern life as an information source, e-commerce platform, and recreational environment. At the same time, the web has become an increasingly competitive environment, where service providers have to maintain a high level of service quality in order to attract users or customers, and where users have a need for tools that help them find and use the information and services on the web that best suit their needs.

This course introduces methods and techniques for the design of intelligent solutions for web-based services and knowledge discovery on the web. The course also serves to give a broader introduction to data mining and machine learning with application beyond web-based data.

Målgruppe:

Developers of software that use or provide web-based services.

Web-designers or business consultants with an interest in advanced solutions for user-adaptive web-based services.

People with a general interest in methods for intelligent information retrieval and knowledge discovery in databases.

  Undervisningsform:

The first two modules (enkeltfag) are composed of three full-day lectures combined with project work and distance-based studies.

The third module is conducted as project work.

In addition to the three full-day lectures, the students should expect to spend one full day of studying pr. week during the whole period of the module.

Yderligere information
Indhold:

This course introduces methods and techniques for the design of intelligent solutions for web-based services and knowledge discovery on the web. The methods can be seen also in a more general data mining and knowledge discovery context, where relevant information should be found and extracted from a large body of data.

The contents of the course combines elements of Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Mining.

The topics covered are

  • intelligent methods for information retrieval on the web,
  • methods and techniques for creating web-based services that interact with the user in an intelligent and adaptive manner,
  • use of user provided content, such as usage logs and user feedback,
  • recommender systems,
  • fundamental techniques for mining data,
  • knowledge discovery on the web.

The course consists of three modules. The first two modules constitute the theoretical part, and will be given in the form of courses. In the third module, the participants should apply selected core techniques and methods from one of the modules in an industrial setting (possibly based on their own work place).

Udbytte:

The aim of this course is for the participants to become familiar with key concepts and methods for designing intelligent web-based services.

After completing the course, the participants will be able to

  • apply information retrieval techniques for constructing intelligent webbased service, including techniques for making personalized recommendations of new relevant information/items.
  • apply machine learning and data mining techniques to web data with the aim of e.g. creating user-adaptive web services.
  • apply techniques for constructing services for searching and mining the content and the structure of web pages.

The participants will also get hands-on experience working with concrete techniques for constructing intelligent web-based services. This practical part of the course will primarily be achieved through the project work (third module), but also (albeit to a lesser extend) through the two first modules.

Adgangskrav:

The participants are assumed to have a basic understanding of algorithms and data structures, but programming experience is not a requirement.

For the third module it is a prerequisite that the participants have competencies corresponding to those obtained by following at least one of the two first modules in Intelligence and the Web.

It is an advantage to be reasonably proficient in English, since most of the lectures will be conducted in English.

Indhold:

The web is growing very fast and in an unorganized manner. For users of the web it is difficult to find and explore provided information. Therefore, many of the intelligent web applications nowadays contain technologies which allow for intelligent information retrieval to locate and access relevant information for a user.

These information retrieval methods are not only of interest for web applications, but also for a wide range of other scenarios where relevant information has to be found in large collections of electronic documents. Intelligent filtering and recommendation techniques can be used to customize the provided information further towards an individual user’s interests.

Specific topics covered by the module are:

  • Information retrieval, including document representation, retrieval methods, and evaluation of retrieval performance.
  • Recommender systems, including content-based and collaborative filtering techniques.
  • Knowledge representation and semantic web, including metadata concepts such as RDF Schema and XML topic maps.
Udbytte:

After having followed this module, the participants should

  • have knowledge about key concepts and techniques for knowledge representation, and
  • be able to apply techniques for information retrieval and for constructing recommender systems.
Undervisningsform:

Three full-day lectures combined with project work and distance-based studies.

Eksamensform:

Individual, internal, oral, graded examination based on a report documenting a miniproject carried out in connection with the module. The grade is based on the 7 grade scale.

Indhold:

This module introduces fundamental data-mining and machine learning techniques, and shows their applications in discovering knowledge from web-data such as usage logs, web content, and web structure. For example, by mining usage-logs we may adapt and customize web-pages to individual users or make targeted advertisement campaigns.

Specific topics covered by the module are:

  • Fundamental data-mining techniques for data clustering and association rule mining.
  • Machine Learning techniques for constructing models for prediction and decision support.
  • Web data mining, including web usage, content, and structure mining.

During the module, software tools for data mining and machine learning will be
demonstrated.

Udbytte:

After having followed this module, the participants should be able to

  • analyze a web mining problem with the aim of selecting a suitable data mining or machine intelligence technique for solving the problem, and
  • apply key data mining and machine intelligence techniques for analyzing and mining an existing collection of web data.

Indhold:

The module is conducted as project work, and constitutes the practical component of the course. The participants will be divided into smaller groups (possibly one person groups), and should focus on solving a specific problem in an industrial context using the techniques presented in one of the first two modules.

The project work should be documented in a report that forms the basis for the final evaluation.

Udbytte:

This module will focus on the application of intelligent web techniques. The aim is to analyze, apply, and evaluate selected core techniques from one (or both) of the first two modules in an industrial context of the participant’s own choice.

After the project has been completed, the participants should be able to

  • describe the application of core information retrieval or knowledge discovery techniques in relation to the chosen industrial context. The focus will depend on the type of the project.
  • account for the theory and principles underlying relevant information retrieval or knowledge discovery techniques. The focus will depend on the type of the project.
  • make a prototype implementation of the chosen techniques, possibly using existing software systems.
